Sushil’s appeal

CHITWAN: Acting president of Nepali Congress Sushil Koirala urged the Maoists to go to the people by stopping all activities of pro-Maoist Young Communist League. Addressing a mass meeting held by NC Chitwan in Bharatpur on Sunday, he urged the Maoists to come in CA election after returning the land and property they had seized from citizens. Koirala said he is ready to work as a mediator even though he is not in the government. — HNS

Man crushed to death

CHARIKOT: Thirty-one-year-old Santa Thami of Khopachagu-2 in Dolakha died on the spot on Friday after a stone fell over him. The incident occurred when Thami was constructing a road for the Upper Tamakoshi Hydropower project. Thami’s body has been handed over to his relatives after post-mortem. — HNS

‘TMDP ready for talks’

KHAJURA: Leader of the Tarai-Madhes Democratic Party (TMDP) Hridayesh Tripathi has said his party was ready for talks with the government to solve problems in the Tarai. Speaking at a press meet in Nepalgunj on Saturday, Tripathi said the CA polls were important but they would be meaningless without proportional representation. Tripathi also claimed that all armed and unarmed groups agitating in the Tarai would come for talks if the government clarified its stance on Tarai issues. — RSS

MAHOTARI: Satya Narayan Sahani of Banauta- 9 died when a tractor overturned, the Mahottari District Police Office said. Property worth over Rs 10,000 was gutted in a fire at a shop belonging to Lalan Kumar Mandal in Malibara, Bhithamod. — RSS

Audio record released

KATHMANDU: Minister for Information and Communications Krishna Bahadur Mahara released an audio cassette and CD of songs titled Keshi Foyul (Motherland). The songs highlight cultures of Mugu district. The cassette is produced by the National Institute of Performing Arts. Mugum Chhornen has sung the songs. — RSS

Call for timely polls

BHAKTAPUR: Vice-president of the Nepali Congress Prakash Man Singh has said that constituent assembly polls must be held on time to uproot the monarchy once and for all. Addressing a party cadres’ gathering in Bhaktapur on Saturday, Singh said the NC was committed to holding the polls on April 10. — RSS

Sitaula’s warning

PYUTHAN: Nepali Congress has enough power to act against forces trying to foil the election to constituent assembly and nobody should try to take the law into their own hands, Minister for Home Affairs Krishna Prasad Sitaula said on Sunday. He said this while addressing a NC mass meeting at Sworgadwari campus here. Home Minister Sitaula said not only the state, but the NC and public also would punish anyone trying to foil the CA polls. Speaking on the occasion, NC central member Manmohan Bhattarai expressed his pleasure at Prachanda’s decision to contest polls from Rolpa and Kathmandu. He said; “Now the Maoists should know how difficult the democratic exercise is. He has to face the same people who suffered at his hands.” NC student leader Gagan Thapa also addressed the mass meeting. Minister Sitaula left for Rolpa late on Sunday. He is scheduled to address a programme at Liwang on Monday. — HNS
