Former MP abducted

SIRAHA: An armed gang abducted a former Member of Parliament from the Nepali Congress, Nathunisingh Danuwar, from the Mirchaiya-based Sagarmatha Higher Secondary School on Friday, principal of the school, Pradip Tiwari, said. Danuwar, a native of Dhangadhi-2, and former headmaster of the Mohan Secondary School Rameshwor, Ramakaran Singh, had gone to the school to meet principal Tiwari. Danuwar was elected a member of parliament from the Siraha constituency no-2 in the general election of 1991. — HNS

Bomb defused

KATHMANDU: Unidentified persons hurled a bomb on the premises of former Home Minister Kamal Thapa’s house in Chandaul at around 5 pm, the police said. Thapa was in the house when the incident occurred. An APF bomb disposal squad defused the bomb. One Karabir Nepali, identifying himself as the military commander of the Nepal Jana Adhikar Samrakshan Manch, owned up the act and said he had triggered the blast at the Bishalnagar-based house of a former Minister of State for Information and Communication, Shrish Shamsher Rana, on Thursday. — HNS

UK official’s visit

KATHMANDU: The British Foreign Ministry Additional Director for South Asia, John Dennis, will visit Nepal from June 18-20, 2007 with an objective of taking information regarding ongoing peace process of Nepal. He is scheduled to separately call on government officials, party leaders and representatives of international community and civil society, said British Embassy in Nepal.— RSS

Fire in factory

BIRATNAGAR: Property worth Rs 60 million was gutted when a fire broke out at the Khanar-based Kulayan Battery Factory in Sunsari district on Thursday. According to Birendra Karki, the factory-owner, a short circuit caused the fire. It took five fire engines seven hours to douse the fire, the police said. — HNS
