Rhino kills one

NARAYANGARH: One person was killed when a rhinoceros attacked him in the Chitwan National Park (CNP) on Monday. Shambhu Mahato, 40, a resident of Madi of Baghauda-6, who was collecting hay in the buffer zone of the CNP, was attacked at 7 am on Monday and died instantly, police said. — HNS

PLA verification ends

NAWALPARASI: The verification process of personnel of the People’s Liberation Army’s fourth division at Jhayaltungdanda in Nawalparasi completed on Monday. A UN team had started verifying the PLA personnel in the camp on January 17. The UN team on Monday started registering the weapons of the PLA personnel. A source at the Maoists’ fourth division camp said the process of locking up of the arms in containers also started on Monday. — HNS

School catches fire

HETAUDA: Property worth Rs 210,000 was destroyed after the Chandrodaya Lower Secondary School building at Padmapokhari VDC-6, Makwanpur caught fire on Monday morning, according to the Pashupatinagar Area Police Office, Hetauda. The cause of the fire is yet to be known, police said. — RSS

Scribes’ rally

HETAUDA: Journalists, demanding press freedom and flaying the attack against scribes and media houses in the Terai, staged a protest rally in Hetauda on Monday. The participants of the rally condemned the thrashing of THT photojournalist in Birgunj, Ram Saraf, attack on Radio Birgunj and vandalism in the office of the Parsa chapter of the Federation of Nepalese Journalists. The rally started from Loktantrik Chowk and converged into a corner meeting at Chamber Chowk. — HNS

Lahan probe begins

SIRAHA: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and the Office of the High Commissioner of Human Rights (OHCHR) in Nepal have begun a probe into the Lahan incident. “Initial investigation of the incident that occurred on January 19 has started,” NHRC regional director (Biratnagar) Suwarna Karmacharya said. “It was found in the initial probe that the police used excessive force to bring the situation under control,” he said. — HNS

One killed in mishap

DHADING: One person was killed and another injured when a truck (Ba 2 Kha 1080) headed for Kathmandu from Baireni in Dhading skidded off the road and fell 25 metres down into the Maheshkhola at Aathkilo along Prithvi Highway on Monday. Truck driver Bir Bahadur Tamang of Baireni-9, Dhading, was killed on the spot, while helper Chhetra Bahadur Tamang of Churiyamai-5, Makwanpur, was injured, police said. — HNS

‘FM threat a plot’

KATHMANDU: Threats received by Narayani FM in Birgunj to halt its regular news broadcast are part of a “well constructed plot to disrupt press freedom”, a statement issued here on Monday by Bishnu Hari Dhakal, the general secretary of Broadcasting Association of Nepal, said. “The increasing risks involved in broadcasting journalism and the act of vandalising media installations and abusing media personnel is a crime,” the release said. — HNS
