Two houses gutted

BARA: Two houses were gutted in a fire that broke out at Ratanpuri-9 in Bara district on Monday. Houses of Nirmala Timilsina and Prem Bahadur Syangbo were gutted and property worth Rs 70,000 and 85,000 was destroyed, the Neejgadh area police office (APO) said. Meanwhile, property worth Rs 50,000 was gutted when a house located at Mainitole of Bara caught fire on Sunday night. — HNS

Injured cop dies

BARA: Police constable Birendra Yadav, who was injured in a motorbike accident in the Tamagadhi area of Mahendra Highway on January 11, died undergoing treatment at Bir Hospital in Kathmandu on Sunday morning, said inspector Rameshwor Yadav at the Nijgarh area police office. Two police constables — Yadav and Shekh Abdullah — were injured when the motorbike they were riding hit a deer on the highway. — HNS

NHRC appointments

KATHMANDU: Officials at the NHRC have demanded immediate appointment of NHRC members to ensure effective role of NHRC during the constituent assembly elections to be held in June. In a statement on Monday, some 34 NHRC officials have also demanded that the NHRC be made inclusive. — HNS

Sachit’s land seized

Rasuwa: The Maoists have taken control over the land and house owned by former Chief of the Army Staff Sachhit Shumsher JB Rana at Gatlang Parbatikunda area of Rasuwa. According to a statement released by the CPN (Maoist), Rasuwa, some 16 ropanis of land and a house at Gatlang VDC-4 and the house registered in the name of a relative of former military secretary of the palace, Rishi Kumar Pandey, have been seized. The house was built by army men mobilised for construction of the then Trisuli Somdang road. — RSS

Two houses gutted

INARUWA: A fire gutted two houses at Inaruwa-8 in the Sunsari district on Sunday night, police said. Deputy Superintendent of Police at the Sunsari District Police Office, Manoj Poudel, said property worth Rs 200,000 at the houses belonging to Bambhole Mehta and Sahadev Mehta was gutted in the fire. — RSS

Citizenship issue

NEPALGUNJ: Preparations for distribution of citizenship certificates have been completed in Banke. The District Administration Office has constituted nine teams for this purpose. The teams will distribute citizenship certificates to 40,000 people in the municipality and 46 VDCs. — RSS

Tyre-burning opposed

NARAYANGARH: Women and environmental activists staged a rally here on Sunday, calling protesters not to burn tyres at crossroads. The Agriculture and Environment Conservation Forum at Bijayanagar (Chitwan) had held the rally. — HNS
