One dead in rhino attack in Chitwan

CHITWAN: One person has lost his life in a rhino attack while fishing in Rapti River which flows through the Chitwan National Park.

The deceased has been identified as local Phadindra Chaudhary (59) of Saranghat in Bharatpur Metropolitan City-28, said Assistant Conservation Officer and Information Officer at the National Park, Gopal Ghimire.

According to him, four persons including Chaudhary had gone fishing at around 7:00 on Monday evening. The rhino that appeared from the river attacked Chaudhary and injured him. Three others remained safe in the incident.

Injured Chaudhary was admitted to Chitwan Medical College at around 9:00 pm the same day. However, he breathed his last during the course of treatment at 3:30 am Tuesday, informed District Police Office, Chitwan.

As many as 12 persons have lost their lives to animal attacks inside and around the National Park premises so far in the current fiscal year. Similarly, five persons had died last fiscal owing to the same reason.

There is a provision to provide compensation for incidents of animal attack in the areas surrounding CNP, however, no such compensation is provided in case the incident occurs inside the National Park premises.
