One killed as police, criminal gang exchange fire in Rajdevi Municipality

An Indian national died in an exchange of fire between the police and a criminal group in Rajdevi Municipality-4, Rautahat, last night.

After getting information that a few Indian criminals were seen in the Bagmati embankment area with firearms for the past few days, the District Police Office, Rautahat, had deployed a police team in civvies to monitor the situation.

Police said they fired in self-defence when the gang opened fire on them. The deceased has been identified as Indrajeet Giri, 24, of Muzaffarpur, India. “He received bullets in his leg and back. We rushed him to Gaur Hospital for treatment, where he was pronounced dead,” said DSP Ram Kumar Dani.

Further, the DSP said two others of the gang had escaped. “The three had arrived on bike, but when their friend was shot, others ran away towards the border,” he said, adding police fired 31 rounds of bullets at the scene.

Police have found an SMG, four bullets and a magazine from the site.
