One killed, four injured in Kanchanpur police firing

DHANGADHI: A child lost his life while four others sustained injuries after police opened fire at protestors staging demonstration in front of District Administration Office in Kanchanpur, today.

14-year-old Shani Khuna of Bhimdutta Municipality, Bhagatpur was shot dead by the police.

Likewise, four protestors sustained injuries after police opened fire as they tried to enter DAO building. The injured are receiving treatment at Mahakali Zonal Hospital.

Kanchanpur has been witnessing violent clashes over the week after the police allegedly paraded a mentally unstable person as the perpetrator behind the rape and murder of 13-year-old Nirmala Panta. Locals have been staging protests in various areas of the district demanding authorities to book “the real culprit”.

Assistant Chief District Officer Shankar Adhikari confirmed the shooting incident.

Nepal Students’ Union had organised today’s protests against the remark made by NCP (NCP) leader Bhim Bahadur Rawal calling it politicisation of Panta’s rape and murder incident.

Eight persons including two police personnel were injured during police-protestors confrontation in Traffic Chok, Kanchapur, a day ago.
