Phulpati, seventh day of Bada Dashain, being observed today

KATHMANDU: The seventh day of Bada Dashain festival, also called 'Saptami' or 'Phulpati', is being observed throughout the country today.

Phulpati -- an assortment of flowers, leaves and fruits of different plants considered auspicious -- is anointed at the Dashainghar today. Similarly, Phulpati is taken into people’s homes as per Dashain tradition today.

The Gurujyuko Platoon, Nepal Army, Nepal Police, high-ranking officials of Armed Police Force and civil service, the Asha Gurja team, music band, panchebaja band, decorated kalsyoulis, along with a procession and cultural pageantry leave Hanuman Dhoka for Jamal with the Phulpati.

During monarchy, the king, as head of state, used to attend the Phulpati ritual at Dashainghar, but with the advent of republic system, Minister for Culture attends the ceremony, said the Durbar Museum Development Committee.

The auspicious hour for bringing in Phulpati this year has been fixed at 4:00 pm. It has been learnt that Minister for Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation, Rabindra Adhikari, and local level representatives of Kathmandu have been invited to attend the ritual.

Though Dashain begins from Ghatasthapana, the festival witnesses special fervour from this day forth.

All government as well as private offices close down from today encouraging people to go back to their respective ancestral homes and take blessing from Goddess Durga as well as their elders.
