PM consults fringe left parties
KATHMANDU: Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal today held political consultations with the fringe leftist parties at his official residence, where he solicited feedback from them on running the coalition government more effectively.
Chandra Dev Joshi,
general secretary of the CPN-United, said they advised the PM to create conducive atmosphere for the timely promulgation of the new constitution and taking the peace process to a logical end.
"We advised the PM to expedite work on the peace process (integration and
rehabilitation of the verified-Maoist combatants) before the adoption of the new constitution," Joshi told this daily after meeting the PM.
He added that there was no need to change the leadership of the coalition government and the partners in the democratic alliance would face a no-trust-motion if the main opposition party tabled it in the parliament, the winter session of which begins on April 4. Joshi said they asked the PM to maintain law and order in the society and provide relief package to the people.
Raghuji Pant, PM's chief political advisor, said the leaders of the four fringe parties pledged their support to the government and asked the PM to move ahead boldly. Pant quoted the leaders as saying it was the responsibility of all the parties and the Constituent Assembly to draft the constitution.
"If the new constitution does not come on time the government will not be responsible for the same," Pant quoted Chitra Bahadur KC, leader of the Rastriya Janamorcha Nepal, as saying. Pant said the parties stressed the need to consolidate unity of the democratic alliance of the 22 parties in the coalition government and politically expose the Maoist ideology.
Besides Joshi and KC, CP Mainali of the CPN-ML and Sunil Prajapati of the Nepal Workers' and Peasant Party attended the meeting.
