PM consults Election Commission on polls in two phases

KATHMANDU: Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal on Sunday held consultations with the top guns of Election Commission regarding holding the local level elections, scheduled for May 14, in two phases.

Prime Minister Dahal had invited Chief Election Commissioner Ayodhee Prasad Yadav and other commissioners to his official residence in Baluwatar for a meeting this morning.

Top leaders of the two ruling parties -- Sher Bahadur Deuba-led Nepali Congress and PM Dahal-led CPN Maoist -- had committed the agitating Federal Alliance to holding local elections in four provinces that touch Tarai-Madesh region in the second phase.

The two sides have chosen to hold elections in Province No. No. 1, 2, 5 and 7 , where the number of local levels will be altered as per yesterday's agreement, on June 14 in the second phase.

The government, however, will formally announce the date for second phase of elections after consulting the Election Commission and endorsing the agreement by the Cabinet.
