KATHMANDU, SEPTEMBER 25
Prime Minister Balendra Shah met UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres at the UN headquarters on Thursday ahead of his address to the 81st session of the UN General Assembly.
During the meeting, Shah thanked Guterres for his goodwill towards Nepal and congratulated him on his tenure as UN secretary-general. He briefed Guterres on the heavy loss of life and property caused by the recent Bhotekoshi River disaster in Rasuwa and the continuing risk of glacial lake outburst floods.
Guterres expressed sympathy over the loss of lives and property and reaffirmed the UN's solidarity with Nepal on climate-related issues. He also praised the young Nepali delegation attending the General Assembly.
Recalling his visit to Nepal as a tourist in 1978, Guterres said he would continue to support Nepal after completing his term.
The two also discussed the rehabilitation of riverside communities, green reconstruction and a possible extension of the timeline for Nepal's graduation from the Least Developed Countries category.
