Poudel urges Maoists to wake up to country's need

KATHMANDU: Vice President of Nepali Congress (NC) Ram Chandra Poudel today urged the Unified CPN-Maoist to give an outlet to the political impasse.

"The UCPN-M has a tendency of taking 'fanciful' decisions and confusing people with its vague terms. It shows that the party is in an illusion and is creating a false impression among the people," Poudel said at the Reporters' Club here today. He was referring to the Maoist plans of blockading the Tribhuvan International Airport and declaring autonomous states across the country. "The Maoists later withdrew both the programmes, falling to public pressure and realising that the acts were anti-national and would violate the Comprehensive Peace Agreement," Poudel said.

He, however, appreciated the Maoist dynamism of correcting mistakes. "Crisis of confidence cripples the former rebels. I urge them to wake up to the country's immediate need of promulgating a new constitution on time," the NC Parliamentary Party leader said. Reiterating that his party would continue to support the UML-led coalition, he said, "Frequent change in governments creates instability and affects the constitution writing process."

Poudel accused the UNMIN of being biased while suggesting a national unity government. "The UNMIN has been unable to monitor the Maoist combatants, who are involved in criminal activities, and to discharge the disqualified and minors."

He said the new leadership modality of the NC would strengthen intra-party democracy, adding that 80 per cent of Mahasamiti members supported the collective leadership system during the recent Mahasamiti meeting.

"The recent amendment in the statute will transform the party, making its organisation strong. After the party's General Convention scheduled to be held in March, the party president will be only the 'first among equals'."

"The party will take decisions only after a through discussion," he said. Poudel declined to reveal whether he would contest for presidency.
