Poverty rate alarming: Chitra Bahadur KC

Nawalparasi, February 7

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Cooperative and Poverty Alleviation Chitra Bahadur KC today said the number of people below the poverty line had massively increased in the country after last year’s devastating earthquake and blockade at various border points for months.

Speaking to media persons at Gaindakot of Nawalparasi today, DPM KC said the government was collecting data of poor people in as many as 25 districts across the country of late.

He added that people below the poverty line would be provided with identity cards within this fiscal.

The concrete data of the poverty-stricken population in as many as 50 districts will be collected within the next year and they will be provided employment, education, health, and subsidy loan, among others, he said.

“If the country’s government remains stable, Nepalis will not have to suffer from poverty,” he claimed.

He added that industrial development could boost the country’s prosperity and appealed for an industrial revolution in the country.

He also underscored the need to curb various illegally run cooperatives and their wrong motives. “Hence, there is no option but to bring a cooperative revolution to ensure people’s prosperity,” he said.
