Pregnant women fined for missing regular check-up

Women at Chhatara VDC-1 have decided to take action against those pregnant women who do not attend regular check-up in Bajura.
The mothers’ group formed in the locality decided to fine pregnant women who do not show up at the health facility for regular health check-up. This decision was taken with the aim of piling pressure on women to consider their health. “Fifty rupees will be charged every time a woman misses her check-up date and doesn’t inform about her delivery date to other women,” said Shanta Devi Rawal, a health volunteer.
According to her, the women have also decided to fine those who do not attend the meeting of the group Rs 20.
As pregnant women have to face various complications if they do not visit health facilities during pregnancy, a decision to this effect was taken for their good, he said.
Regular monthly meeting of women, sharing among pregnant and new mothers and other women about their health, raising health awareness and providing counselling to family members are regular programmes of the local mothers’ group.
Assistant Health Worker Kuber Singh of Chhatara Health Post, said the number of pregnant women visiting the health facility after the decision has gone up remarkably.
