Province 5 to be named Lumbini

Bhairahawa, December 16

A Special Committee formed by Province 5 Provincial Assembly has agreed to name the province Lumbini but has failed to agree on its headquarters.

Despite the disagreement on the name of headquarters, the 15-member committee is preparing to submit its report to the PA. The Provincial Assembly had formed the committee to fix the name and headquarters of the province 15 months ago.

Committee member and Samajbadi Party-Nepal’s Chief Whip Sahasram Yadav said that the report would be submitted to the PA within two to three days with final suggestions.

According to Yadav, the committee agreed to name the province and recommended Rupandehi, Kapilvastu and Dang as alternatives for the headquarters. “The committee prepared the report after visiting all 12 districts of the province and through group discussion,” he said.

Possible names recommended for headquarters are Rupandehi’s Butwal or Sainamaina, Kapilvastu’s Banganga and Buddhabhumi, Dang’s Bhaluwang or Lamahi.

The recommendation will come into effect only after it is approved by a two-thirds majority of the Provincial Assembly.

Special Committee Coordinator and Provincial Assembly member Dipendra Pun said the winter session of the PA would commence in the fourth week of December and fix the name and headquarters of the province. It is learnt that lawmakers of the ruling Nepal Communist party too are divided on the issue.
