KATHMANDU, OCTOBER 12
At least 17 people have died in different incidents caused by incessant rainfall in the past 24 hours largely in the western hilly areas of the country.
National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority, issuing a bulletin today, stated that 17 people died in Kalikot, Mugu, Humla and Bajura districts while 17 others were reported missing in the past 24 hours. Similarly, 15 people have suffered injuries and 43 livestock have been lost in a day largely due to landslide caused by heavy rain in the post-monsoon season.
All the deaths are related to landslide, except one in Kailali, which was caused due to drowning. Similarly, Manthali Airport in Ramechhap district recorded highest amount of rain (40.4 mm) in the country which disrupted transportation and airplane flights.
More than 30 people have already been reported killed by the natural disaster related to heavy rainfall in the past few days. On October 10, four person of the same family died after a house in Humla was swept away by landslide, while 13 people attending a funeral in Kalikot district were also killed by similar havoc on the same day.
NDRRMA data shows that at least 276 people have lost their lives in the past five months to various natural disasters. Of all the deceased, 91 people died in landslide and 17 died in flooding, while 79 died of lightning strike. Thirty-three more people have gone missing and most probably have died. Casualties due to rain-related havoc during the monsoon season in not uncommon in the country, but the number of people dying in the post-monsoon season has increased significantly this year.
