Kathmandu, May 11

Rastriya Janata Party-Nepal leader Rajendra Mahato said his party would not let the government hold local polls in Madhes if the statute was not amended to address the demands of the agitating forces.

Addressing a press conference organised by Reporters Club here today, Mahato said his party would not only boycott local elections but also disrupt them if the constitution was not amended, the number of local levels was not increased in the Madhes and if false cases slapped against the cadres of agitating forces were not withdrawn.

“The next meeting of the Parliament is scheduled for May 18. If our demands are not met by then, we won’t allow elections to be held in the Madhes,” he said, adding that the RJP-N did not take part in the first phase of elections as the party’s demands were not met.

Mahato said the Upendra Yadav-led Federal Socialist Forum-Nepal’s decision to take part in the first phase of elections had confused some people that the RJP-N too would take part in elections even if the constitution was not amended, but the RJP-N and Federal Alliance would not make the mistake that FSF-N had made. He said the new movement would also target those forces that were opposed to constitution amendment and those who abandoned the agenda of marginalised communities.
