Damak, April 28:
Bhutanese refugees in Nepal have requested the secretary general of United Nations, Kofi Annan, for his cooperation in solving their problem. The appeal was made by the Human Rights Organisation Bhutan on behalf of the refugees to Annan. The group urged him to create a conducive atmosphere wherein active assistance of India would be available. Signed by the HROB president, Suk Bahadur Subba, the letter of appeal said that the problem has been lingering despite efforts of Nepal and Bhutan and that the Indian government needs to cooperate in this regard. The appeal said, “There is no sign of solution from the talks held by the Bhutanese government on refugees’ issue. Bhutan is trying to skirt the issue and necessary pressure has not been brought to bear on it.” The letter also urged the UN to exert pressure on Bhutan and Nepal while playing the role of a mediator. It said, “India being a neighbour of both the countries, we are hopeful that Annan will play a catalytic role in instilling
inspiration for India’s active role in solving the refugee problem.”
