Saptakoshi River flow increases, 29 sluice gates opened at Barrage

KATHMANDU: The Saptakoshi River river flow has increased as rainfall continues in the hilly region of eastern Nepal, the Rastriya Samachar Samiti reported.

The river flow was recorded as 2,25,814 cusec at the Koshi Barrage at 7 pm today. As many as 29 sluice gates, out of 56, have been opened to release the water from the barrage as the water level continued rising since this morning.

According to the RSS, the river flow was recorded at 2,35,000 cusec on July 16, the highest of the year.

To release the water, 35 sluice gates were opened that day, the RSS quoted the chief of Sunsari District Police Office, SP Posharaj Pokhrel.

The swollen Saptakoshi poses threat to around 15,000 houses in Tapteshwori and Bhagalpur of Udayapur district, the RSS reported, referring to the Udayapur District Police Office.

 

Meanwhile, floods in the Thadi River of Triyuga Municipality-7 in Udaypur breached its embankment and entered the human settlements, inundating 40 houses from Thadi and Pratibha villages, according to the RSS.
