DHANGADHI, AUGUST 15
A search operation has been launched for a 27-year-old man who jumped into the Mahakali River from the Banbasa bridge along the Nepal-India border in Kanchanpur on Friday.
Sunil Khatri, originally from Lekam Rural Municipality-6 in Darchula, had been working in India and had arrived at his sister's home in Bhasi, Bhimdatta Municipality-3, Kanchanpur, only on Thursday.
Security personnel from Nepal and India began searching for Khatri after receiving information that he had jumped from the bridge. The operation was suspended after dark on Friday and resumed at around 7am on Saturday.
A joint team comprising personnel from the Nepal Army, Nepal Police and Armed Police Force, including disaster management-trained personnel, has been mobilised with a rubber boat, according to Prem Prakash Sigdel, superintendent of the Armed Police Force and chief of APF No. 35 Battalion, Shaileshwari.
The search has been complicated by the strong current in the Mahakali River. Security personnel said they were continuing the operation in possible areas along the river using available resources and equipment.
