Second phase of local elections rescheduled for June 28

KATHMANDU: The second phase of the local level elections has been rescheduled for June 28.

The government had earlier decided to hold the local polls on June 23. The Cabinet meeting held at the Prime Minister's official residence in Baluwatar this morning took the decision to postpone the elections by five days.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Home Affairs Bimalendra Nidhi said the government decided to reschedule the election as the day coincide with the last Friday of their month-long Ramadan Festival.

PM Pushpa Kamal Dahal had held consultations with the Election Commission officials on Tuesday to fix a new date for the second phase of local polls.

Muslim organisations on Tuesday had submitted a memorandum to Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal urging him to change the date of the second phase of local polls in a way that it did not coincide with Ramadan.
