Security affects Moharram celebration

Nepalgunj, February 10:

The third biggest festival of the Muslim community, Moharram, concluded today by consigning the Tajiya at a holy place along with celebrations.

Traditionally Moharram is celebrated during the night time but this year’s Moharram was much affected because of curfews, clashes and several bomb explosions and other security concerns, local Muslims said.

The festival is usually celebrated from seven in the eveining till late into the night. But this year, the celebrations began as early as 11 am in the morning with special permission from the local administration office, the elderly Muslim leaders of Nepalgunj said. This has affected our celebrations and fewer people took part because of adverse security situation, they said.

On the last day of the festival, Tajiya is taken out from each homes and Chowks and consigned at Karbala (a holy place). Thousands of Muslims consigned Tajiya from their homes at Karbala situated at Phultekra of Nepalgunj today, the Moharram and Karbala Conservation Committee said.

There are over 30, 000 Muslims in Nepalgunj.
