Security beefed up in Rajbiraj before UML-UDMF showdown

RAJBIRAJ: Cadres of Madhesi parties staged a torch and stick rally on Sunday here in the Saptari district headquarters against the main opposition CPN-UML’s Mechi-Mahakali campaign and mass meeting scheduled for Monday.

The parties affiliated with the United Democratic Madhesi Front have called a general strike tomorrow to disrupt the CPN-UML’s programme as a part of the party’s nationwide campaign.

People from rural areas have been brought to Rajbiraj to prevent the UML's function.

More than 10,000 cadres will come to the streets tomorrow, UDMF’s Saptari coordintar Dinesh Kumar Yadav said.

Security has been beefed up in the district considering the potential clash between the two sides.

Security personnel have been deployed at all the entry points of Rajbiraj, CPN-UML’s party office and in the areas where local UML leaders reside.

UML changes venue

Meanwhile, CPN-UML has changed the venue of mass meeting and the route of Mechi-Mahakali campaign due to security concerns.

The party had earlier scheduled the mass meeting at the Raj Stadium in Rajbiraj.

Now, the mass meeting will be held at the Maleth VDC-based industrial area, which is three km away from Rajbiraj, according to Govinda Neupane, the party’s district chairman.

The Mechi-Mahakali campaign will reach the venue via the highway as per the new plan.

The UDMF, on the other hand, has warned of thwarting the UML programme in new venue also.

The UML is holding programmes in Inaruwa of Sunsari and Kanchanpur besides Rajbiraj tomorrow.
