Senior advocate Kusum Shrestha dies at 83

KATHMANDU: Senior advocate Kusum Shrestha has passed away. He was 83.

Nepal Law Society (NLS) executive director Krishna Man Pradhan was quoted in Rastriya Samachar Samiti as saying that Shrestha was admitted to the Thapathali-based Norvic International Hospital after he complained of difficulty in breathing. He breathed his last at the hospital at 5:35 am today, Pradhan added.

Shrestha was born in Bandipur of Tanahu and had received the LLB degree from Kolkata of India. He was the first president of the Nepal Bar Association (NBA), Supreme Court unit and had served as the NBS chairperson also.

He has authored several books and articles about law. Shrestha as a legal practitioner had pleaded in favour of the then democratic leaders including BP Koirala during the Panchayat regime.

Administrative Court Nepal chair Kashiraj Dahal said Shrestha had, as a professional and responsible law practitioner, played an important role in the development of law education and constitutional development at home.

Late shrestha is survived by his spouse, a daughter and three sons.

His mortal body will be kept on the premises of NBA from 1:00 to 4:00 pm tomorrow for last tributes and his last rites will be conducted at the Pashupati Aryaghat tomorrow evening, according to the family source.
