Seti erosion puts 200 houses at risk

Tanahun, July 23

The erosion caused by the Seti River has put around 200 houses in danger in Bhimad Bazaar of Bhimad Municipality, Tanahun.

The flood in the Seti has posed serious threat to houses on the river banks at Bhimad Bazaar. The erosion has also put government structures, including a health post, in danger. Chair of Ward No 6 of Bhimad Municipality Shyam Sundar Joshi said the Seti’s erosion had put around 200 houses in jeopardy. “Locals are living in fear as the river might sweep away the settlement at any time,” Joshi added. Joshi informed that Rs 4.6 lakh was allocated from his ward for embankment construction. He said it needed Rs 20 million to build  the embankment.

Bhimad Municipality Mayor Mesh Bahadur Thapa said it required a big project from the centre to control erosion caused by the river near the bazaar area. “We cannot build embankment with the municipality’s budget,” Thapa said, adding that his office was planning to seek budget from the centre for embankment construction.

Hasta Bahadur Khadka  of Tanahun chapter of Federation of Nepali Chamber of Commerce and Industry said the state should be serious about protection of Bhimad bazaar. Local residents urged the government to control erosion caused by the Seti River.
