Seven rhinos die of natural causes in three months

CHITWAN: Seven rhinos died in Chitwan National Park due to natural causes in the first three months of the current fiscal year, officials said.

Chief Conservation Officer of Chitwan National Park Bed Kumar Dhakal said that the rhinos died due to old age, infighting and languishing in the swamp. Likewise, a male rhino hit a female to death, a crocodile gobbled up a baby rhino and next one died due to kidney and lungsĀ  infections. However, no rhino died at the hands of poachers in the review period.

According to Dhakal, a dozen rhinos had died of natural reasons including four due to floods during the same period in the last fiscal year.

Information Officer of the Chitwan National Park Nurendra Aryal said the death of rhinos due to natural causes had increased with the rise in their population. A total of 26 rhinos died of natural causes in the last fiscal year, the highest death toll so far in a single year.
