Shashank Koirala says ready to be NC PP leader

Chitwan, February 20

Nepali Congress General Secretary Shashank Koirala today said he was ready to be the party’s parliamentary party leader if elected unanimously.

Talking to mediapersons at Bharatpur airport, Koirala, however, held that he would not stake his claim for the PP leadership if election were to be held. “I will be Party’s Parliamentary leader only if I am selected unanimously, but I will not contest the poll for the same,” Koirala added.

When asked about unification between the CPN-UML and CPN-Maoist Centre, Koirala said he was glad to see unity between the two communist parties.

“The unity has encouraged the Nepali Congress to be strong. Though the unity has challenged the Nepali Congress, it has sent out a message to the NC to be united if it has to play a role of strong opposition in the Parliament,” he added.

Koirala said that his party would conduct the mahasamiti and central committee meetings and deliberate over the party’s future course of action pronto.

NC General Secretary Koirala admitted that party meetings could not be held as NC President Sher Bahadur Deuba was busy during his tenure as prime minister. He said that they would launch a campaign to strengthen and save the NC.
