KATHMANDU, DECEMBER 11
Six Nepali Congress leaders, including incumbent President Sher Bahadur Deuba filed candidacy for party president today.
Among the six leaders who have filed nomination for party president are Deuba, Bimalendra Nidhi, Shekhar Koirala, Prakash Man Singh, Kalyan Gurung and Yubaraj Neupane. The 14th National Convention will elect the party's new leadership. Voting will take place on Monday.
Nidhi, who was earlier with Deuba, also filed his candidacy for party president. Similarly, Prakash Man Singh and Shekhar Koirala from the rival faction of Nepali Congress led by senior leader Ramchandra Paudel filed candidacy for party president as the faction failed to agree on a consensus candidate.
Sujata Koirala, Shekhar's first cousin and daughter of former prime minister Girija Prasad Koirala, is contesting for vice-president from Prakashman Singh's team. Mahesh Acharya filed his candidacy for the post of vice-president without aligning himself with any of the two dominant factions led by Deuba and Shekhar Koirala. Bishwa Prakash Sharma also fled his candidacy for general secretary without aligning himself with any of the dominant factions.
Deuba and Shekhar Koirala have announced the names of their team members. Twelve other candidates for the party's office bearers post also filed their candidacy from their respective teams today.
