Snowfall affects life in far-west districts
Dipayal, February 11:
Incessant snow and rain for the past two days has crippled life in the far western hilly districts.
The temperature has plummeted. As the roads are covered with two feet thick snow, no vehicle is plying on Bhimdutt Highway or Dashrath Chand Highway.
Locals said half a dozen vehicles are stranded on the roads in Dadeldhura region alone. Snowfall has also disrupted the functioning of the Nepal Telecom repeater tower in Kafali.
People in Bajura district are staying indoors due to snowfall, said a local media man Chhakk Bahadur Malla over the telephone. Farmers, however, are elated at the the rainfall as their crops had almost dried up.
The snowfall has also pevented candidates from reaching the Far Western Regional Police Training Centre to apply for vacancies in different posts.
Although the snowfall partially affected the SLC sent-up examination in the schools in high-altitude regions, the situation was not so bad as to cancel the examination, said an official at the regional education directorate Lal Bahadur Kunwar.
Regional administrator of the Far West Tek Bahadur Thapa said they would have official details by this evening.
Nepal Students’ Union central member Harka Bahadur Deuba said the NSU district
convention has been postponed due to snowfall.
Meanwhile, a report from Nepalgunj said flights from Nepalgunj to the hilly districts
of Karnali zone were disrupted due to snowfall.
The Nepalgunj Office of the Civil Aviation Authority (CAAN) said flights on the Nepalgunj-Kathmandu route operated.
There was 1.5 feet of snow at the Simikot Airport in Humla, Nepalgunj chief of CAAN, Suresh Kumar Azad said, adding: “Flights were cancelled after getting information of the snowfall.”
All flights to Dolpa, Rara, Simikot and Jumla were canceled due to bad weather, Yeti Air staff said. In Kalikot district, people are not venturing out of their houses due to snowfall.
