Shops in rural areas of Ramechhap district have been selling Sophie, though this alcoholic product has already killed nine people in the district.

The sale of Sophie has been going on even after the district administration imposed a ban on its sale, locals said.

Many people of rural areas have been drinking Sophie since it comes cheap, they said.

Some dealers have been selling Sophie on people’s request, locals said. “Despite the ban on its sale, Sophie is being sold openly in rural markets,” said a villager of Chisapani-7 said.

Meanwhile, deputy superintendent of police Khinu Prasad Acharya said police had been informed about villagers’ attempts to seize and dump bottles of Sophie.

“We are ready to seize the product. For this, locals should inform us where it is being sold,” he said.
