KATHMANDU, MAY 17
Efforts are underway to evacuate a veteran Spanish mountaineer from the high camp on Mt Dhaulagiri, sources confirmed.
According to base camp officials, 84-year-old Carlos Soria was injured above 7,000m on Mt Dhaulagiri after he slightly fell down from the climbing route above camp III.
A group of Sherpa climbers have been bringing him down from the incident site after he reported leg injuries," sources told THT.
Seven Summit Treks has put a helicopter standby to evacuate the climber from the lower camp, it added.
The 84-year-old climber, who headed for high camp for his 15th attempt on Mt Dhaulagiri, was preparations to make summit push when the incident occurred.
Carlos, who had done his first eight-thousander - Nanga Parbat - at the age of 50, is the only mountaineer to have successfully climbed ten mountains above 8,000 meters after turning 60.
Carlos had already made 14 attempts on the world's sixth-highest peak but he couldn't make it to the top of the summit.
