Stance on secularism

KATHMANDU: Although the parties agreed on Tuesday to clarify the issue of religion in the new constitution, they are yet to agree on whether to mention the term “secularism”.

Unified CPN-Maoist said the secularism should not be removed from the draft of new constitution, rather it should be clarified in the constitution itself to avoid any misconception on it.

“Secularism should be explained in clear terms, such as the state will not have particular religion, a person will have right to adopt any religion, the state will treat all religions equally and forceful conversion will not be permitted,” said UCPN-M leader Narayankaji Shrestha.
