Starvation looms large in Raute settlement

DAILEKH: Owing to the authorities' failure to give away the regular allowance, people belonging to the nomadic Raute community here in the district have been pushed on the brink of starvation.

The Rautes, who otherwise used to exchange their wooden vessels for foodstuffs in the locale, have been further worried as their handicraft too lost its charm among the local residents lately.

And now, the deceasing temperature has been adversely affecting the children and elderly of the Raute community here on the banks of the local Lolere rivulet in Narayan Municipality-9.

Main Bahadur Shahi, Mukhiya of the community, said that the hand-to-mouth problem was spiralled in such a way lately that it began claiming lives as well.

“My people are dying out of starvation as the government did not provide the allowance on time,” he said, adding, “Among others, children and elderly have been hit-hard due to the problem.'' According to him, most of the Rautes have been living without food for many days as they already ran out of food. “Many might die of hunger in case they don’t get money at the earliest.''
