Statute amendment will solve Tarai problem: Basnet

Minister for Home Affairs Shakti Bahadur Basnet today said the problem of Tarai unrest will be resolved with the constitution amendment proceedings in Parliament and that will pave the way for import management at the border points.
Basnet, who arrived in his home district in the course of the statute publicity campaign, claimed that with endorsement of the constitution amendment bill, which has been tabled in the Parliament, the Tarai agitation will be resolved.
He clarified that the government would not compromise on the issue of provincial boundary under pressure. “The provincial boundary can be changed as per the all-party consensus within three months. There is no option but cooperation and mutual understanding among parties to deal with the existing problems the country is facing,” he reiterated.
Basnet argued that the government was serious about saving the lives of earthquake victims. “Though the government had sent the budget to give relief amount of Rs 10,000 to each family to manage warm clothes to beat the winter chill in the VDCs’ account, the victims were deprived of the amount due to lack of VDC secretaries. Hence, the government is preparing to mobilise the 150 newly inducted officers for the task,” he claimed.
Basnet also said the government has directed the concerned authorities to take stern action against the black-marketeers. He also directed the chiefs of the district offices to devote themselves to effective and timely delivery of services, besides stressing on development projects.
