Statute drafting deadline can be extended: Deuba
DHANGADHI: Former prime minister and senior leader of Nepali Congress Sher Bahadur Deuba today said the constitution writing term could be extended by six months if the task is not accomplished in the stipulated time.
Addressing a meet organised by Press Union Kailali, Deuba said, ''Constitution is more important than the timeframe.'' He, however, was cautious that political parties could lose the people's confidence if the deadline was changed. "The statute can be drafted soon if all the political parties come to terms of agreement."
Stating that the proposed high-level political mechanism should have been formed immediately after the CA polls, Deuba said the country would not have faced such a disaster in that case. "The mechanism will do good even if it materialises late. It is inevitable to draft the statute and take the peace process to a logical conclusion."
"The Maoists should come to consensus by giving up their claim to correct the President's step since no other party is against his move," the NC veteran said. ''The Maoists should agree with other parties for the sake of peace and constitution.''
