Street play highlights women’s issues

Sarvnam Theatre Group today presented a street play titled “Naya Adhyaya” in Kawasoti

and Gaidakot of Nawalparasi district with a view to encouraging greater participation of women in the country’s peace process.

The play was an attempt to portray the problems faced by women within the family in particular and society in general. It also successfully sent out the message that women should and can emerge as self-reliant and independent individuals.

Talking to this daily, spectator Sita Shrestha from Kawasoti said it was evident that women can take charge of their lives and work in a self-reliant manner at the domestic and social levels. She added that the play was a positive attempt to change the mindset of people about social superstitions like untouchability, caste discrimination and the stigma attached to widows.

Artiste Meena Khadka, who acted in the play that was directed by Ashesh Malla, said they tried to impress upon women the need for their greater participation in the peace process and encourage them to face the challenges before them.

Aside from Meena Khadka, Ramesh Khadka, Om Mani Sharma, Nahunchhe Shrestha, Ram Hari Khadka, Sushma Koirala, Sulochana Nepali, Rajesh Khadka, Ram Shrestha, Rita Tamang, Matina Manandhar, Rita Manandhar and Tika Bhakta Rijal acted in the 50-minute play.

Director Malla said UNMIN and UNFPA lent their assistance in the production and staging of the play.
