GAIGHAT: A student leader loyal to Netra Bikram Chand-led CPN Maoist was arrested on the charge of extortion from an illegal boulder trader in Udaypur on Tuesday evening. Surendra Khatri, coordinator of the party’s sister wing, was arrested while trying to collect one lakh rupees from a tractor trader of Triyuga Municipality. According to DSP Surendra Bahadur Gurung of Udaypur District Police Office, a public offence case has been filed against Khatri at the administration office. Though the local administration has banned excavation of river products for the past two years, illegal mining has continued unabated in the district. The locals complained that security personnel and employees of the district development committee were involved in the illegal excavation.
