Students attack lawmaker

POKHARA: Students affiliated with the student wing of the ruling CPN-UML today attacked Maoist Constituent Assembly member Rajkaji Gurung. The ANNFSU activists manhandled Gurung, who was elected form Kaski Constituency No 2, at the main gate of Prithvi Narayan Campus in Pokhara.

Police saved him from sustaining an injury. The students also attacked other UCPN-Maoist leaders including Hari Adhikari, Jhalakpani Tiwari and Ramji Baral.

Baral is said to have sustained injuries all over the body. The students had also abused the lawmaker and the leaders verbally.

The leaders were entering the campus premises to participate in a convention of the Maoist-affiliated Nepal National Professors' Union. Some ANNFSU activists also sustained injuries in the incident.

According to Parshuram Koirala, an eye witness, the students also tore the banners put up at the programme venue.

Retaliating Maoist-affiliated ANNISU-R activists tore in turn the banners of the rival student wing. The campus area remained tense the whole day through as the activists hurled stones at rival union supporters.

The programme started only at 2 pm. Standing Committee member of the UCPN-Maoist, Barsaman Pun had inaugurated the programme.
