Students lack textbooks in flood-hit areas

Biratnagar, August 31

Floods that occurred two weeks ago in Morang have left thousands of students without educational materials, including textbooks, in the district.

Teaching-learning activities have been badly affected as students from flood-hit areas of the district are compelled to go to school without textbooks.

They have been waiting for textbooks as well as relief materials. As many as 11,600 students from various private and community schools are facing the problem after their settlements, mostly in the southern part of the district, were inundated in the floods.

According to District Education Office, Morang, as many as 10,000 students from community schools and 1,600 students from private schools were adversely affected in the floods in the district.

District Education Officer Debendra Raj Khanal said floods had destroyed 138 community schools in the district.

He informed that preparations to bring textbooks from Janak Education Materials Centre was under way. “We have requested donor agencies to manage school uniforms for students,” he said.

Khanal also added that his office would coordinate with locals for management of more resources, in case educational materials provided by donors did not suffice.
