Students protest Friday’s shooting by armed forces

Mahendranagar, May 1:
Rattled by Friday’s incident wherein security forces shot at some students, agitated
students organised protest rallies in different parts of Mahendranagar and also forced all educational institutions to shut shop for the day.
Addressing a protest rally at Madan Bhandari Chowk, member of the All Nepal National Free Student’s Union (ANNFSU) aligned to CPN-UML, Janakraj Osthi, called on students to rise up against the cruelty of the security forces.
Accusing the security forces of shooting at the student leaders after taking them under control, ANNFSU put forward a three-point charter of demands and also called a Mahendranagar bazaar bandh for tomorrow.
The union warned that if the victims were not given compensation and guilty
security forces not punished, the students’ movement would pick up steam. Osthi called for an investigation committee to probe the incident.
Meanwhile, the injured central committee member of ANNFSU Nar Bahadur Dhami, joint-secretary of district committee Mahesh Pant and Jan Jyoti Campus student Kiran Chhetri are recuperating. The three are undergoing treatment at Sharda Hospital located in Pilibhit in Uttaranchal state of India.
Nepal University Teachers’ Association of Siddhanath Multiple Campus Unit and Siddhanath Multiple Campus, Mahendranagar, have condemned the security forces’ action.
The ANNFSU, Banke, also denounced the incident and demanded action against the security forces involved.
