KATHMANDU, JULY 28

Sudurpaschim Province Chief Minister Kamal Bahadur Shah is scheduled to seek a vote of confidence on Thursday.

The Nagrik Unmukti Party (NUP) abandoned the government after Chief Minister Kamal Bahadur Shah dismissed Rameshwor Chaudhary, Minister for Industry, Tourism, Forest, and Environment, from the party.

The Nepali Congress parliamentary party meeting, held immediately following the provincial assembly meeting on Monday, decided that Chief Minister Shah would seek a vote of confidence in the provincial assembly meeting of Thursday.

Chief Minister Shah will seek a vote of confidence in accordance with the constitutional provision requiring a vote of confidence if a government-supported party withdraws its support. Sudurpaschim has 52 provincial assembly members (one is suspended).

Shah requires the support of 27 legislators to clear the floor. Shah currently has the support of 29 people, including 18 from the NC and 11 from the CPN-UML.

The opposition consists of 10 CPN-MC members (excluding the Speaker), seven NUP members, three CPN (US) members, one RPP member, and an independent member.
