Sugarcane farmers obstruct Rautahat road for second day

RAUTAHAT:  Sugarcane farmers in Rautahat district on Thursday also obstructed the Gaur-Chandranigahapur road section in the district for the second consecutive day demanding that the Shreeram Sugar Mills immediately pay them the due amount for purchase of the sugarcane.

The protestors gathered in front of the Mills in Garuda Municipality and obstructed the road from 11 am to 2 pm today that left hundreds of passengers stuck halfway.

A farmer leader, Ashok Yadav, said, "We have resorted to protests because the agreement made in the presence of Industry Minister Som Prasad Pandey and other top officials has not been implemented despite the repeated assurances."

He informed that the company was due to pay them as much as Rs 950 million for three fiscal years including the current one.

Yadav also said the farmers had tried to make their voices for heard despite all the adversities they faced. But, the Mills has been too reluctant to pay them forcing the farmers to hit the streets, he commented.

The leader said the protesters would obstruct the Rautahat section of the East-West Highway on coming Saturday.
