Suicide rates on the rise in Panchthar
PHIDIM: The suicide rates have rapidly increased in Panchthar district.
In the fiscal year 2014/15, a total of 34 people committed suicide — eight by consuming poison and 26 by hanging in nooses, according to the data provided by the District Police Office (DPO), Panchthar.
Similarly, in the fiscal year 2015/16, a total of 17 people committed suicide — eight by consuming poison and 10 others by hanging,
Likewise, the data shows the rapid increase in suicide rate in the fiscal year 2016/17. A total of 49 people committed suicide in which five died from consumption of poison while 44 others took own life by hanging.
Meanwhile, in the period from Mid-July to Mid-December in the current fiscal year 2017/18, 23 people have already committed suicide — three died from poison and 13 by hanging in the eastern district of Nepal.
The women between 13-50 years of age whose husbands are either in foreign employment or separated or divorced, and some pregnant are in majority on the list, the DPO informed.
It is to take note that in the last four years, the country has seen 13 per cent increase in suicide rate.
