Sushil floats novel plan for PLA integration

Banke, November 16:

Acting president of the Nepali Congress Sushil Koirala said today that the Maoist People’s Liberation Army could be integrated into any of the security agencies save the Nepal Army.

Koirala said his party would not object to such integration.

“The peace accord has mentioned that the PLA combatants could be part of the Industrial Security Force, Border Security Force, Nepal Police and the intelligence service,” Koirala said at a press conference organised by the Nepal Press Union’s Banke chapter in Nepalgunj today.

“Merger of a politically-indoctrinated army and the national army will lead to a conflict, which might morph into civil war,” reiterated Koirala.

The NC leader blamed the Maoists for not guarantying peace and security for the people even after ascending to power.

“The Nepali Congress does not have faith in the CPN-Maoist,” he said.

He said the Maoists have been repeating the mistakes like mobilisation of Young Communist Leagues, seizing the private properties instead of returning them to their rightful owners and operating Kangaroo courts, Koirala said the Maoist had been ignoring their commitments.

He also blamed Prime Minister Prachanda for not taking a tough stand on several issues.

“While in India, Prachandaji speaks one thing. He changes tone while he is in the US,” said Koirala.

“We have launched a people’s awareness campaign throughout the country to protect democracy,” the NC stalwart said.
