Tarai problem will be solved soon: PM
Kathmandu, February 17:
Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala today assured his party’s parliamentary committee that the Tarai problem would be resolved through dialogue and the Constituent Assembly election would be held on April 10.
The PM reiterated that he would not compromise with anyone when it comes to nationality, sovereignty and territorial integrity.
“I have told India and the UN that I will never compromise on sovereignty and integrity,” he added.
The PM said that some media reports had wrongly interpreted his remarks made in Biratnagar yesterday. However, he did not elaborate.
Koirala also said the name lists of party’s candidates on the fray for both the proportional presentation and first-past-the-post elections would be made simultaneously public within the next few days. NC General Secretary Bimalendra Nidhi said that the party was finalising the list of candidates.
Meanwhile, the PM before returning to Kathmandu today, said: “I want to assure all that the Madhes problem will be solved soon.” He said that he would take a decision on the Madhes agitation after meeting Madhesi leaders on reaching the capital.
Earlier, PM Koirala met security chiefs of the eastern region this morning and directed them to make reliable provisions for security in regard to the constituent assembly (CA) polls. He also expressed his commitment to hold the polls at any rate.
Acting administrator of the eastern region Narendra Dahal briefed PM Koirala about the security situation of the region. Stating that the Madhes agitation would get an outlet soon, PM Koirala assured the security chiefs that the agitation would not disrupt the polls.
