Tension ran high in Attariya Chowk and Bus Park area of Kailali district today in the course of a campaign to remove illegal structures built on the roadside.

After encroachers refused to vacate the roadside on their own, Godawari Municipality had to mobilise security personnel to forcefully clear the structures constructed illegally along the road.

The illegal occupants, however, remained adamant and refused to vacate their houses until another provision was managed for their resettlement.

Earlier, such illegal roadside structures in Attariya Bazaar were removed with the joint initiative of the municipality and the road division office without any hassles. But, some people again erected structures illegally on the road.

Regarding the campaign to clear the road, Godawari Municipality Mayor Harisingh Saud said that the illegal roadside structures had been an eyesore and were contributing to the rising number of accidents in the area. “As the structures are illegal, we started removing them,” he said, adding, “we will not halt the demolition drive until illegal structures are removed.”
