Tension runs high in Jaleshwor after clashes

KATHMANDU: Tension ran high in Jaleshwor, the district headquarters of Mahottari district, since early Thursday after violent clashes between protesters and police yesterday.

More than 10 demonstrators were injured yesterday when they had clashed with the police, the Rastriya Samachar Samiti report.

From this morning, the protesters have intensified their demonstrations by burning tyres and clashing with police in Cinema Chok, Durga Chok and Nagarpalika Chok, the RSS added.

The Unified Democratic Madhesi Front has called for indefinite shutdown in the district for last 20 days against proposed demarcation of the states in the new constitution.

The demonstrators were also present in Buddhi Chok, Hospital Chok and Shankar Chok, sloganeering against police. To disperse the crowd, police had used 15 rounds of tear gas, five rounds of rubber bullets and few demonstrators and police were injured in the clashes.

For last 20 days of the bandh, life in Jaleshwor is crippled and the surrounding area is reeling under the scarcity of petroleum products, medicine and daily consumable items.

Educational institutions, banks, financial institutions, factory, industries, governmental and non-governmental organisations are affected by the bandh. The transportation has also come to a halt.
