Birgunj, January 18:
The Parsa District Court today granted the police to keep murder-accused CA member Babban Singh in detention for three days.
Singh was arrested from Birta of Parsa district yesterday on the charge of his involvement in the killing of two Birgunj-based businessmen.
District court judge Ajay Raj Sharma granted permission to the police to keep Singh in custody, following a hearing on the case filed by the police against him.
The government lawyer had sought court permission to keep Singh in detention for seven days for investigation.
Saying that it was not necessary to keep singh in detention, Parsa chapter of Nepal Bar Association pleaded on behalf of Singh.
Chairman of the Parsa NBA Sudhir Karna said they would file an appeal in the Hetauda Appellate Court against the detention, as the government lawyer had not followed proper procedures while filing charges against Singh.
Besides Karna, 11 lawyers including advocate Devendra Singh, Rajeshwor Tiwari, Panna Lal Gupta and Birendra Yadav of the Parsa bar pleaded on the side of Singh.
Singh was presented before the court by the police amid tight security at 1 pm. Talking to journalists while being taken to the court, Singh alleged that vested political interests were making attempts to create troubles for him.
He said he was also unaware of the persons who were detained in connection with the killing of the businessmen.
Meanwhile, Singh’s supporters closed Birgunj bazaar through the day today, demanding his release.
Cadres of the Independent Youth Force and the Madhesi Trade Union Federation took out a rally at Main Road and vandalised a few hardware shops at Meena Bazaar.
The agitators vandalised a vehicle with Indian number plate (JH 05 N 4433) that was carrying MJF convention representatives in front of Hira Plaza, the police said. Police detained five agitators from Ghantaghar Chowk.
A report from Chandranigahpur of Rautahat, from where Singh was elected CA member as an independent candidate, Singh’s supporters obstructed traffic movement in Chandranigahpur.
