Three held for selling land with fake documents

Chitwan, March 23

Chitwan Police arrested three persons for their involvement in selling someone else’s land by producing fake documents in Sauraha, Chitwan.

Mersingh Gharti, of Kiteni VDC-5, Baglung, along with Durga KC and Bimala Thapa, of Kathmandu, were arrested.

The trio had registered 19 kathha and 14 dhur land owned by Kamal Basnet of Bachhyauli-2 in Gharti’s name.

Basnet, on the other hand, had no idea that his land had been sold without his knowledge. Upon finding out, he had filed a case at Chitwan District Police Office. Other people involved in the incident are said to be at large.

Police had arrested the trio after Basnet lodged a case at the DPO and Land Revenue Office, Chitwan. The record at the land revenue office shows that Basnet’s land was registered in Gharti’s name on January 23.

The fraudsters had sold Basnet’s land for Rs 20 million. According to the Land Revenue Office, they paid eight lakh rupees to the office as tax.

After registering the land, they had kept it as collateral with Kathmandu-based Jyoti Development Bank and withdrawn Rs 20 million loan.

The market price of the land is around Rs 50 million. SP Basant Bahadur Kunwar said Chitwan District Court had extended the trio’s seven-day remand.

A manhunt is on to book as many as 15 persons. With soaring land prices in Chitwan, such kinds of fraud incidents have increased in the district.
