Police in Parsa have arrested a ward chairperson and a ward member over a drug smuggling case.

Ward 1 Chairperson of Pakahamainapur Rural Municipality Ambika Sahani, ward member Balistar Sahani and their helper Ram Adesh Sahani were arrested after they were found smuggling drugs in a government vehicle.

A police team in civvies, acting on a tip-off, arrested the trio from Birgunj Metropolitan City at about 10:00pm.

"Upon getting a tip-off, we stopped a motorbike that the ward chair was riding and found 79 grams of heroin hidden in the filter box of his bike from near Barwa of Birgunj metropolis," said Parsa police chief SP Bel Bahadur Pande, adding that the chair was riding a government bike.

According to SP Pande, ward member Balistar Sahani and Ram Adesh Sahani were on a separate bike closely following the ward chairperson. "All the three arrestees have been brought to the DPO and investigation has started," he said.

As per sources, the arrests were followed by frenzied UML district leaders trying to secure the release of the local representatives held with contraband.

Ward Chairperson Ambika and member Balistar were elected from the CPN-UML.
